ピナ・バウシュ ヴッパタール舞踊団は1986年に初来日し、いままでに19作品82回の公演を行い､現代の舞台芸術の最先端を行くピナ･バウシュの世界を紹介してきた。2006年は初来日から20年目にあたる。
ピナ･バウシュ自身が踊る「カフェ・ミュラー」と「春の祭典」によるピナ・バウシュの代表作を一挙上演。
公演会場は20年前と同じ国立劇場（三宅坂）で、劇場の機構にあわせた特別演出で行われる。

悪い出来事や不幸な出来事が重なり、二度と作品はつくれないだろうと思うくらい危機感に襲われていた。
人はそんなときでも、生きようとする力を身体の中に宿らせている。
そして、新しい方法で新しい実験が始まった。
さまようように何かを求めて動く。
ピナ・バウシュは、危機的状況の中でも生きなければならないこの大切さを生命の力の「結晶体」として作品にまとめ、我々に生きることの意味を問いかけてくる。
身体にはそれぞれの体験がきざみつけられている——。
ピナ・バウシュの少女時代のあるときの記憶の光景が繰り返される。
「春の祭典」
20年ぶりに日本の舞台に。
現代芸術の中で最も重要な作品の一つ。
20世紀初頭、新時代の人々を鼓舞していたバウハウスの芸術運動の流れであるドイツ表現主義の伝統とのかかわりのうえで、ピナ・バウシュの身体表現のイデオム（語法）の原形がほとんどつくられ、「ピナ・バウシュの世界」が確立された作品。
「春の祭典」は、1913年に作曲されてから、ピナ・バウシュの振付までに８人ほどの振付家が挑戦しているが、｢犠牲｣をテーマにするストラビンスキーのパワーのある音楽をとらえ、ピナ・バウシュは非凡な才能を発揮して優美でヒューマニティに満ちた生き物の再生への鮮やかな“新しい創造”の「春の祭典」を生み出した。
犠牲が宣告され、人間の無慈悲の世界。男たちの欲望。
森の空地。赤い布の上に一人の若い女性が横たわり、赤い布は、次々と次の女性に手渡され、ついには最後の女性に。その布は赤い衣裳となる。突然恐怖にかられる犠牲の乙女。
フィナーレは31名のダンサーたちによって、土に抗いながら走り、跳び、倒れ、土にまみれた身体で動き回る、すさまじい迫力で展開される。
見る目をかえることによって､異様なものを通して本当の人間のすがたを見せてくれる。ピナ･バウシュは、「美や真実を発見されてくれる」。
人のいのちは、ほんのつかの間のできごと——。
何と魅力的なことか——。
